What Shapes Your Tattoo Quote? 5 Factors to Consider

October 19, 2026·By American Tattoo Society
Five factors to discuss for a tattoo quote: size, detail, placement, color plan, and design work.

Tattoo quotes reflect the work involved in your specific piece. Five useful factors to discuss are size, detail, placement, the color plan, and design work. Share those choices when you request a quote so the conversation starts with the tattoo you actually want.

1. How does tattoo size affect the quote?

Use a familiar item, such as a business card or a sheet of computer paper, to describe the space you have in mind. Size helps establish the scope of the project.

For example: “About business-card size on my outer forearm.” If you are open to a different size, say so.

Describe tattoo size with a business card or sheet of computer paper.

2. Why does the amount of detail matter?

A simple outline and intricate linework or shading involve different work. Detail helps determine the time needed, so a reference can help explain the look you want.

Point out the elements you care about most. “I like the clean outline, but I do not need all the small background details” gives the conversation a clearer direction.

Tattoo detail and shading help determine the work and time involved.

3. Does placement affect a tattoo quote?

Yes. Placement can affect the work involved. Tell us the exact spot and side of your body rather than only “arm” or “leg.”

If you are choosing between two placements, mention both. The quote should reflect the location you are considering.

Specify the exact placement and side of the body for the tattoo quote.

4. How should I describe the color plan?

Tell us whether you are thinking about black and grey, full color, or solid blackwork. The color plan is part of the project being quoted.

If you are undecided, say so. Avoid assuming a fixed price difference between color and black and grey; the overall design still matters.

Share your color plan: black and grey, full color, or solid blackwork.

5. How does design preparation fit into the quote?

A custom idea and an existing flash design can involve different preparation. Explain whether you want a new composition or have a particular existing design in mind.

Share useful references and explain what you like about them. References communicate direction; they are not a promise to duplicate another artist’s work.

Custom ideas and existing flash designs can involve different preparation.
